The linguistic view of communism in Leopold Tyrmand's Dziennik 1954. Interpretation supported by the methods and tools of computational linguistics

Abstract

Literary scholars often do not trust computer tools in the analysis of text. This article aims to show how digital methods can be used to propose new ways of analyzing a given text – namely, Leopold Tyrmand’s Dziennik 1954 – based on data derived from digital analysis. Considerations of a genological nature are presented, supported by the results of stylometric research. A linguistic
view of communism emerging from the text is interpreted on the basis of a corpus study. The methods proposed thus combine not only traditional poetics with modern, computer‑based analyses, but also literary and linguistic research.
