Non-Musical Features of Deathcore in its Early Stages (up to 2007)

Abstract

Deathcore is one of the extreme metal genres that emerged in the early 21st century. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the extra-musical (genre) elements characteristic of deathcore during its early development (up to 2007). In accordance with Alan F. Moore and Franco Fabbri’s theories on genre and style in popular music, this study examines the determinants of deathcore through features manifested in: song lyrics, album covers, band logos, concert behavior, the clothing features of both artists and audiences, and narratives surrounding this movement.
